Our Befriending Service is for older people who may feel socially isolated and lonely. Our target client group is the 40% of Lambeth residents aged over 55 who live alone, although some of our clients do live with family. Research suggests loneliness can be as harmful to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Befriending provides a person with a valuable link to the outside world and often acts as a gateway to further support and social activity. We match each client with a suitable volunteer who lists them for one to three hours a week for some company.
Together we provide a range of services that can support people in need. Support includes information and advice, advocacy for people in difficulty, help and advice with direct payments, assistance in filling out forms and claiming a full entitlement of benefits, support for unpaid carers, a befriending service and community development. The ILCP is also one of the best places in Lambeth to volunteer, with a range of opportunities on offer for people to give back to the community and gain valuable new experience.
Time Loving Care Befriending plus project provide support for local residents during and after a period of ill health, including helping with shopping, going for walks or accompany to medical appointments, topping up gas or electric key and phone calls and home visits. We also read letters and help to make phone calls to agencies.
Link Age Southwark provides volunteer support to older people feeling lonely or isolated in Southwark. We run a befriending service where a volunteer visits an older person for one hour, once a week, in their own home. We also run 24 exercise and activity groups across the borough ranging from gentle chair based exercise to singing, bridge to reminiscence. Link Age Southwark also provides regular volunteer transport and light DIY and gardening tasks.
South London Cares is a community organisation of people aged 65 and over who get together with their neighbours, in their 20s and 30s, to share time, friendship and fun across Lambeth and Southwark. We have around 20-25 Social Clubs every month, held across the two boroughs, including; dances, technology workshops, chair yoga and visits to local galleries and museums. Every clubs is completely free to attend all you need to do is call us up to let us know you're coming. If you're interested in meeting a younger neighbour, but perhaps can't get out and about, we can match you up, one-to-one, with a volunteer through our Love Your Neighbour programme. Once you're matched up with a volunteer they would visit weekly for a catch up and a cuppa. Every winter, from October - March we run our Winter Wellbeing project where we hope to help people, aged over 65 in Lambeth and Southwark, keep warm, active, healthy and connected. We can deliver blankets and warm items to your door, if you're feeling the cold. We have Winter Grants for people facing difficult circumstances over the winter months and we work closely with other organisations who can help with benefits advice and energy saving.
We operate the only free and confidential helpline for older people across the UK that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are there for information and advice, or even just for a friendly chat. We link callers to local groups and services, offer regular friendship calls, and protect and support older people who are suffering abuse and neglect.
